Ghosts
of the Coast
In the Spring of 2020 I helped to launch the Ghosts of the Coast Art/Science Collective, a project led by Dr. Cora Johnston as part of the outreach mission of the University of Virginia Coastal Research Center. A team of scientists (including myself) who do research at this NSF-funded Long Term Ecological Research Station met in a series of virtual meetings with artists who live and work on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay. We discussed the science behind the phenomenon of ghost forests, areas of standing dead trees in coastal areas affected by sea level rise. The result of this collaboration was an interactive 3d virtual tour of both a ghost forest in Nassawadox, VA and of works by the artists that were inspired by this phenomenon.
